POSITION SUMMARY

The Packaging Engineer position is primarily a technical development role which leads new structural packaging design efforts (and improvements to existing) within the product development process. The Packaging Engineer will expose themselves to a number of packaging material designs, to provide guidance in the product development process. Must be able to find technical solutions when problems are identified during the qualification of packaging lines and timely/effectively communicate to key stakeholders. This position requires working with different members of the management team and using their leadership style to address various situations. The packaging engineer will gain an appreciation for keeping an eye on the “big picture” while addressing individual issues.

•        Execute with excellence the packaging programs from concept initiation through completion. Developing timelines, risk assessment and contingency plans to ensure execution of projects with limited supervision to ensure all packaging and quality expectations are delivered.

•        Lead development of structural and technical packaging design efforts across multiple lines of business, (Spirit/Spencer’s PD, sourced/non-PD).

•        Work with Merchandising, Creative, Marketing, Product Development, etc. to test new packaging ideas and concepts. Ensure optimal and accurate parameters are provided for projects early on to guide development and aid in critical decisions.

•        Lead continuous packaging improvements and cost savings efforts across all categories and divisions. Research and introduce new packaging ideas and technologies where applicable.

•        Work with internal resources and packaging suppliers to achieve functional packaging goals.

•        Maintain awareness of technical trends and new developments in the packaging industry.

•        Knowledge of product, process, test methodologies and package interactions along with modes of failure to make recommendations for paper stock and other package substrates.

•        Narrow down variables during development process for inner component packing design to secure, trouble shoot and reduce product damage.

•        Must be able to identify/certify the integrity of factory provided die lines. Improve and create CAD drawings for die lines when required.

•        Identify gaps within internal testing capabilities. Be able to recommend additional critical parameters as well as be able to outline procedures.

•        Knowledge of the printing process to determine how it affects package performance. Effectively apply and make appropriate recommendations.

•        Knowledge of production in China, as well as standards of both programs and stock standards at factory level.

•        Approve top-of-production sample submissions, (TOPs) for all Spirit and Spencer’s products.

Job Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Bachelors in Packaging, Engineering or related field; or relevant experience. 
  • 3+ years in a packaging development/engineering (primarily corrugate and folding cartons) and/or process          development role working with overseas print vendors and management.
  • Experience managing projects within a corporate environment (Product Development, Process Technology, New Product             Marketing, Creative, etc.).
  • Solid understanding of packaging materials capabilities and equipment.
  • Knowledge of packaging test methodology.
  • Strong ability to collaborate and maintain cross-functional partnerships.
  • Strong analytical and logical problem solving abilities.
  • Developing troubleshooting skills with ability to “think on their feet.”
  • Understanding of business principles.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; able to effectively communicate to all levels within the organization.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, CAD/CAM, Adobe Creative Suit, SketchUp and 3D modeling.
